Set up a back-up plan for when the power goes out

1

Ensure Battery Back-up for Medical Equipment

Make sure any medical equipment that relies on power has a battery back-up or a generator. This ensures continuous functionality during power outages. Regularly check and maintain these back-up power sources to guarantee they are in good working condition.

2

Address Personal and Medical Alert Systems

Be aware that personal or medical alert systems may be affected during power outages. Check if these systems have built-in battery back-ups or alternative power sources. Consider having a reliable generator on hand to power these essential systems.

3

Know the Location and Contact Information of Nearest Hospital

Familiarise yourself with the phone number and location of the nearest hospital. In case of emergencies, this information is crucial for quick and efficient assistance.

4

Keep Emergency Phone Numbers Handy

Create a list of emergency phone numbers for your friends, family, doctor, Fire, Police, and Ambulance service. Keep this list easily accessible, such as on your fridge or stored in your mobile phone.

5

Maintain a Phone Independent of Mains Power

Ensure you always have a phone available that doesn’t rely on mains power. Cordless phones and those connected to the NBN may not work during power outages. A mobile phone with a fully charged battery or a traditional landline phone that doesn’t rely on electrical power is ideal.

6

Be Prepared to Leave Your Home

If an extended power outage occurs and it’s safer to leave your home, have a plan in place. Keep a small emergency kit with essentials like medications, important documents, and a change of clothes ready to go.

Being proactive and prepared significantly enhances your safety and well-being during power outages. Regularly review and update your back-up plan to ensure its effectiveness.)
